Description

More Than One Beginning draws on the traditional American literature fiction archetypes of the western and science fiction to place the reader in a strange world fraught with characters and situations with which they are familiar.  However, the reader is also exposed into the psyche of the two lead characters, Risk and Chance; individuals who themselves have no recollection of their lives before the moment they too, as with the reader, awoke to this new world.

Void of memories, our lead characters awake into the setting and try to draw on their own instincts as they make their way through the countryside.  Drawing on thoughts related to solipsism, they wonder what is real, and what or whom they can trust.   Who is the one accompanying each on the journey, and who are they themselves?   These questions are ripe when they wander into another new setting, a town with the promise of answers to the fog of questions in their mind, only to find their condition is shared by all.  This is a second life, and they were brought here for the sins of omission or commission in a first life.

Strange beasts and creatures inhabit this world that is a prison.  All is permissible, save one go against their judgment, and then punishment for the sins of the past or the sins of the present is exacted by the emotionless being called (only in whispers), The Sentinel.   The challenge is no creature has memories of their sins or their punishment, and the judgment of the Sentinel seems capricious.  Risk and Chance come to learn they are creatures of ability with a strong sense of right and punishment based on acts committed rather than randomness.  They and the Sentinel are bound to clash.

This work hopes to propose to the reader concepts of justice and the logic of language.  By erasing the norms of society, the nature of humanity can be examined.  Why does humanity cry for justice, even for those undeserving?  What is the nature of authority over oneself and society?  I have sought to accomplish this intent through the layering of three storylines within this novel:  the first, is the surface story, the second are hints and concepts throughout regarding the “life before” of the principles and many of the other characters, and the third, almost hidden story, involves innuendo about the nature of the divine desires for humanity.

I hope you find it interesting.
